Breast Cancer has always been a cause that I''ve been involved in since my youth. My children and I participated in several walks in NYC. Almost 5 years ago, my godmother had a double mastectomy. I'd always wanted to do the 3 day but knew very little about it. I saw an ad, received more information, spoke with some people and decided I was going to walk 60 miles. Immediately after signing up, a coworkers best friend received a diagnosis - a double and then another teacher received a diagnosis a single and it spiraled after that. I began meeting more individuals that were in education and that I knew personally that received diagnosis and that's when I knew this is what I'm supposed to be doing.
Since their fateful diagnosis, 2 have passed on. So I know the stats are 1 in 8 women. I fight so that we can stop this disease in its tracks and keep other families from suffering in silence, fear, shame and alone.
In 2010-2011 I was an ambassador for SGK and in 2009 I had the honor of being a flag bearer during opening ceremony. For this year 2012, I anticipate great things to continue to happen.
Recently, I wrote a book of inspiration and encouraging messages to and for others that are on a journey of their own. Each person needs to know they are not alone and words are things that you never forget and their impact can be profound. The book has something for anyone facing life's challenges. As you read you're sure to laugh, smile, nod in agreement and shed a tear or two. I want people to be inspired by the book. I want others to know they are not alone on this journey, be eencouraged to share their stories with others. There are people out here doing things on your behalf that you've never met before and giving the support that they can give. This book is just a small piece of that support. My hope is that on days when you're down, and don't really want to be around people, you can find some comfort and something to lift your spirits. Each piece is a sincere, heartfelt emotional piece. I'm truly passionate about what I do and for whom I do it and I know how truly BLESSED I am to not have received a diagnosis.
In late April, I learned of another 3 women that have received diagnosis and 2 that have passed on. This disease doesn't stop IMPACTING others and I won't stop fighting. We CAN'T because it won't.
In essence, this is my story.

As an advocate for the fight against Breast Cancer, I realize that it's important that women get their mammograms, complete their self breast check exams and encourage their sister/friends to do the same.
October is just a couple weeks away. Now is a great time to pick up your copy of Notes Along My Journey to acknowledge Breast Cancer Month and someone that may need a little extra support. This book has brought smiles, tears and nods of agreement to many. A great gift of support.
